What is a hydrostatic valve?

A hydrostatic valve, otherwise referred to as a hydrostatic relief valve (HRV), is an important component of your in-ground pool or hot tub. The valve consists of a spring-loaded one-way valve that allows ground water in and prevents the pool water from escaping. An HRV is especially important during the winter in North Vancouver as the ground water levels can swell above the pool water level. When this happens, there is a tremendous amount of force pushing up on the pool. If the pool water level is too low, this might cause the pool to literally float out of the ground, resulting in irreparable damage to it and your property. This risk is mitigated by the HRV’s ability to let in the ground water so that the pressure is equalized.

One drawback of a hydrostatic valve is that, in time, it can be a stubborn source of a leak. The gasket can become brittle, which leads to a slow and steady leak. Another complication is that the inflowing ground water can bring small rocks which jam the valve open resulting in a leak. During the winter months this might not be as obvious, but come May or June your water bills may increase.

Replacement of the valve is easy enough and does not require the pool to be drained. You can even do it yourself – if you can hold your breath long enough! If not, give us a call.
